History of Wimbledon School of English

Established in 1964, Wimbledon School of English is one of the oldest English language schools in the UK. The school was founded in Wimbledon Village by Mrs Marjorie Housden and she began by teaching English to overseas students who were living and working locally.

By the mid 1970s, the school was so successful that we needed to find larger premises. It was then that we moved down the hill to our current address at 41 Worple Road.

As the years went on and the school continued to grow, we expanded into the house next door. There has also been an extension at the back and as of 2015 we have 21 permanent classrooms spread over three floors.

The school became a centre for Cambridge Examinations in 1979 and was first accredited by the British Council in 1983. Then in 2008, we also became an IELTS test centre and in 2010, the exam centre rebranded as The London Exam Centre.

Over the past 53 years, WSE has developed a reputation as one of the best schools in the UK. It is still owned by the Housden family, who remain dedicated to ensuring that Wimbledon School of English is a centre for academic excellence and quality service provision.
