Our Teacher Training English Language courses are tailored for existing teachers or those interested in teaching the English language.

We offer the following Teacher Training English Language courses

NEW Teaching for the 21st Century is designed for non-native speakers who have experience of teaching English overseas and who already hold a teaching qualification in their own country.  Also new for 2020, we now offer a 4-week live online version of this course which you can take from the comfort of your home.

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) prepares you for the test from the University of Cambridge designed for teachers of English, to speakers of other languages.

The Teaching with Technology course is designed for qualified teachers at any stage in their career who are interested in maximising the use of technology in the classroom.

The CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) course caters for qualified teachers in primary or secondary education who are currently using CLIL for a range of subjects such as mathematics, English, geography, history or any of the sciences.

NEW Trinity Cert TESOL will give you an introduction to theory and practice of how to teach English to speakers of other languages. On this course, you will benefit from feedback from experienced trainers and also receive 6 hours of supported and observed teaching practice. 

Our NEW Academic Management course is for teachers who want to further their career by moving in management, or for newly appointed academic managers. 

Also NEW for 2020, we are offering Teaching Business English. This course will help you to understand the specific requirements of business English students, the best ways to teach them and the type of language they need to help them succeed at work.  

Academic Management

New for 2020!  This course is for teachers who want to further their careers by moving into management, or for newly appointed academic managers. Often, teachers who become managers receive very little management training; on this course you will learn the basic principles behind successfully managing a team of teachers, and how to enhance both the teachers’ professional development and your school’s academic standards.

Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test

This Teachers' English language course prepares you for the Cambridge Teaching Knowledge Test – the test from the University of Cambridge designed especially for teachers of English, to speakers of other languages.

  • The English language teaching course concentrates on the study of "teaching knowledge" - it is not a practical course and so there is no actual teaching involved, although course participants will have the opportunity to observe Wimbledon School of English teachers. It is ideal for those who have recently started teaching or are considering it as a career, but it is also useful for experienced teachers
  • The English language teaching course covers a variety of concepts related to language, language use and the background to and practice of language learning and teaching. It is divided into three modules

Module one: Language and background to teaching and learning

  • Describing language and language skills
  • Background to language learning

Module two: Lesson planning and resources for the language teacher

  • Planning and preparing a lesson or sequence of lessons
  • Selection and use of resources and materials

Module three: Managing the teaching and learning process

  • Teachers' and Learners' language in the classroom
  • Classroom management

You can choose to take a written examination, the Cambridge TKT, at the end of the course. You will also be asked to keep a portfolio during your course but this does not form part of your assessment. You need to have at least a good intermediate level of English to take this course and you should be familiar with basic concepts and language related to language teaching. This course follows our standard timetable of 24 lessons per week/20 hours per week.

The fee for the Paper Based Teaching Knowledge Test (per module) is £51.

CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning)

This course is designed for teachers currently using Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Primary or Secondary education for a range of subjects as such Mathematics, English, Geography, History or any of the Sciences.

There has been a signicant growth in CLIL programmes throughout the world, yet teachers are frequently put into classes without any formal training in the English language. The aim of this course is to give you a thorough introduction to CLIL. You will develop your language ability to create an effective learning environment for your students, while increasing your own confidence in English.

Teaching with Technology

This course is designed for qualified teachers at any stage in their career. Increasingly, teachers are expected to be able to use and exploit a variety of technological aids in a meaningful way. Many teachers feel intimidated by technology, while others find that their own skills and ideas are quickly exhausted.

Course details

During this week-long course participants will study the latest in theory and methodology of teaching English with technology. This will be combined with practical elements in order to build confidence in using a variety of technological aids in the classroom, thus making participants more flexible and effective teachers. There will be opportunities to use a variety of tools and sites, and participants will be encouraged to blog their experience and self-reflection. This course follows our standard timetable of 24 lessons per week/20 hours per week.

Trinity Cert TESOL

New for 2020, we are introducing the internationally-recognised Trinity College London TESOL certificate (Level 5 OFQUAL qualification). This qualification is accepted by the British Council as an initial certification for English language teachers in its accredited teaching organisations in the UK and overseas.

On the course you will receive an introduction to the theory and practice of how to teach English to speakers of other languages. You will also gain an insight into the challenges faced by different types of learners, and how teachers can best help them to achieve their goals.

Over the four weeks you will receive input from experienced trainers, who will explain different ways of guiding students through the complexities of the English language at different levels. As well as the theory, you will also have six hours of supported and observed Teaching Practice, and you will be helped to see things from a student’s perspective by having a short course in an unknown language.

By the end of this course, you will have:
