As the last few days of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships fast approaches, so too does the excitement surrounding the event. There is never a better time to be in Wimbledon, when visitors from all over the world come to watch their favourite tennis tournament in the summer sun (fingers crossed!). But for those who are new to the event, here is some general information for getting the most out of your experience…
1. Tickets – Pricing and Essential Information
Obtaining tickets for the Wimbledon Championships is usually done through a Ballot, or through authorised ticket-agents like Ticketmaster. However the tickets have sold out quickly so the only way to grab a ticket is through ‘the Queue’. There is one Queue for the on-day sale of tickets at the Gate 3 turnstiles. Tickets are sold strictly on the basis of one per person queuing and payment is by cash only. Tickets can only be bought in the queue for the day that you’re in the queue; you cannot purchase tickets for days in advance. So if you are happy to queue for a ticket, it is best to get there early in the morning to ensure you get a good place!
A limited number of tickets are available daily for Centre Court, No.1 Court and No.2 Court, except for the last four days on Centre Court, when all are sold in advance. For further details of the ticket prices on each day, click here. In addition, several thousand Grounds Passes (maximum £25 each) are available each day at the turnstiles allowing use of unreserved seating and standing on Courts No. 3-19! The Grounds Passes are the more popular option, as it saves you money for all the fantastic things the Championships have to offer!
2. Getting there
Location: The All England Lawn Tennis Club, Church Road, Wimbledon, London SW19 5AE.
The closest tube stations are Southfields (15 minutes walk or 5 minutes on the 493 bus headed toward St George's Hospital) and Wimbledon (20 minutes walk or 10 minutes on the 493 bus headed towards Richmond, Manor Circus.) Or alternatively, there is a shuttle bus from Wimbledon that goes directly to the Championships which runs all day, until the late evening.
3. Eating and drinking
For the ultimate Wimbledon experience, you can’t go wrong with the Championships’ delicious strawberries and cream! But if you feel like something more filling, there are a huge range of cafes and food stalls to choose from. We recommend the Aorangi café which serves a wide range of sandwiches, flatbreads and hot food to go which can be enjoyed in the sun on Murray Mound!
